Diplo-“Express Yourself” EP

DJ and producer Diplo is excited to announce the release of the “Express Yourself” EP on his label Mad Decent. The six-track recording from the man who makes up one half of the bombastic duo, Major Lazer, is his first solo release since 2004’s Florida ,a product of the artist’s fearless endeavours of exploring and unearthing new music from around the world,putting together genres from Dancehall to New Orleans Bounce to EDM.

I caught the bombastic duo Major Lazor when they played at Shepherd Bush Empire back in April the only way I can describe a Major Lazor gig is pure carnival madness, with elements thrown in from a Fete better known as a party in Trindad,t-shirt throwing, undressing, champagne shaking, serenaded by confetti and two amazing dancers thrown in all the make up of the Major Lazor experience which is like no other live show you’ve ever seen before,I loved every minute of the gig, leaving the gig on a musical high!…

A$AP Rocky….

I first spotted Rakim Mayers better known by his stage name A$AP Rocky an American rapper and music video director from Harlem, when I came across his video for his track “Wassup”his edge caught my eye from his sound to his style to his lyrical, his sound described as a collective of all music genres, this fusion of everything from culture to life style

draws anyone in whatever their music taste is.

After listening to “Wassup”a 1000 times, I found out he was going to be playing at the Electric Ballroom on the 6^th June I couldn’t wait to see him live.

His Dj appears on stage to warm up the crowd, when the crowd is warm and ready A$AP Rocky plus A$AP Mob appeared on stage and straight away you can feel the intense love for him and his music ,the whole crowd jumping and screaming at the top of their lungs, with the crowd going wild lost in the Purple haze…. He has a kind of stage presence, charisma the whole crowd feeds off, And right in the middle of this magical dancing purple haze of music heaven, track “Trilla” to be exact..

Someone pulls of A$AP’s $15’000 Rolex off his wrist. I don’t know why anyone would come to a gig of a Artist they like and then have the balls to steal the artists percussions. Once A$AP notices his watch has gone the gig was put on a halt until the culprit was found and amazingly enough with the help from A$AP fans throwing some beats to the Rolex thief the Rolex was found and the Rolex was handed back to A$AP…

next A$AP, emerged with a towel over his head , thanked us for getting his watch back for him and the set finished in the purple haze sound that he had first created for us ,the sound that had drew me to his music in the first place..….

Camden Crawl 2012…let the Crawling commence….

When attending the Camden Crawl it is always difficult to know where to start. With over 20 venues pumping out some of the best acts in the music scene one is really rather spoilt for choice.

From Mornington Crescent to Chalk Farm a whole part of the city is transformed into a music festival, though happily given the UK’s recent weather, without the mud, wellies and anorak to shelled from the predicted festival in a field weather.

On Day 1 our Journey on Saturday started in the afternoon at the Jazz Cafe to see Clement marfo and the frontline the only south-west London rock/rap crossover act who’s main aim is to get anywhere they play rocking and the crowd moshing,but what I loved is they pre-worn the crowd at the front in the middle of there set to move if they don’t want to participate in the madness that there about to create.(oh and anyone using any electric device it’s best to move and watch from afar)…

Next up from the madness of Clement marfo and the frontline was a trip across the road to cool bar The Black Heart to see O children performing upstairs squeezed into a humid and huddled dark lit venue ,very much fitting the vocals and sound of O Children’s frontman’s with the dark nature of the songs and vocals beautifully matching the décor of the black heart, thoroughly enjoyed set. And a great way to end day 1 of the crawl putting me in the mood to chill and get set for day 2 of the crawl.

Sunday Day 2 began at the wheelbarrow to check out Johnny foreigner, considering the level of chat in the venue they delivered a brilliant set of new and old hits.……then we strolled to see a very loud kids in glass houses at KOKO the Welsh rock band from Cardiff with there catchy slices of glossy yet impassioned pop-punk,had rock faces to young girls screaming through there set.

Then it was a venture through the mainia of what is Camden when the crawl is on to the Monarch to see Charlie XCX and a performance well worth the trek the cool beats and sheer synth-simplicity gets the crowd dancing musio included.

The final stop of the evening and a great way to end the crawl was seeing Gaz Coombes at the Cuban,only minutes from the Monarch after seeing Charlie XCX which was great on the feet. There’s an awful lot of love out there for Coombes’ former band Supergrass,with the love there the punters packing out The Cuban Bar in Camden’s Stables to see his amazing set and I think one or two hoped he may break out and start singing the much loved Supergrass classic “aright”.

So all crawled out but very musically satisfied it was one drink at the crawl aftershow party then, pasty and bed in mind!…another great Camden Crawl for Musio to remember.

OneFest with Damon Albarn……

Presenter/Blogger Ky heads down to OneFest to check out Dr Dee…….

When I received a invite to go to Onefest a boutique festival,with the likes of The Magic Numbers’ Michele Stodart,Dry the River, great new band crash&thebandicoots amongst many all on the line up ,a festival taking place for just a day in the rolling Wiltshire countryside.

Being a Blur fan I straight away noticed that Mr Damon Albarn was to Headline OneFest too, noticing the weather to be anything but hot and sunny ,I dug the thermals out and on, I was very excited to see Damon play songs from his new project called Dr Dee. Dr Dee is inspired by the life of John Dee, mathematician, polymath and advisor to Elizabeth I. Described by Albarn as ‘strange pastoral folk’, and being dubbed a mini folk opera and all the talk surrounding it in the press, I couldn’t wait to see what it would be like.

When the time came for Damon Albarn to perform the whole festival crowd gathered to watch the most talked about solo project to date with it being so different to his previous work.

The crowd stood there in silence and with the festival being in the rural hills of Wiltshire, where` mobile phones had become redundant with all signals out you could have heard a pin drop in a hay stack so no sound could interrupt the excitement of seeing the performances, the audience couldn’t wait me included to be taken on this trip into the sound of something new.

As soon as Dr Dee begins ,the music creates atmospheres that have their own humour and their own textures.

Which perfectly suited the swirling darkness and gloom of the encroaching early spring evening in one of the most English places in which the festival was taking place.

The ensemble of Dr Dee sit in a semi-circle with Damon Albarn in the middle sat at his keyboard playing, singing and conducting as they journey through a whole gamut of sounds that are equally challenging and entertaining.

There are some stunning operatics from the female singers including the pure voice of Victoria Couper and a amazing falsetto from the male opera singer. The instrumentation reflects the interest in all kinds of music from Africa included in the sound too.

The music allows you to get lost and you forget your standing in a freezing cold field and your lost in the swirl of sound and you enjoy the twist and turns in the music, your completely involved in the genius collarge of Damon Albarn’s amazing creativity.

Damon exits the stage leaving a old wind up player, playing which is a perfect ending to a very special performance.

Albarn and company’s performance proved a fitting close to a perfect off the wall ending to a quirky new festival on the circuit .I love the way Damon Albarn reinvents himself into something new every time, from Blur to Gorillaz etc..then this, it’s different from any other solo project from a artist from the Britpop era and that’s what I love about his work,Dr Dee will be returning to the stage as a full play in the summer, check it out it’s well worth watching.

Reading+Leeds Festival Launch Party….

Every year Reading & Leeds has a Launch party that’s an announcement that tells you the list of bands that will be performing at there fest that year, if you don’t get to attend the launch at the same time the list of bands goes out on Radio 1.

Over the years, READING & LEEDS FESTIVAL has seen some of the most memorable musical moments in history. 2012 will be no exception, Reading & Leeds are very proud to announce that The Cure,Kasabian,Crystal Castles,The Maccabees,Justice,The Horrors,Metronomy,Azealia Banks,Kate B,The Cribs,SBTRKT,The Courteeners,Band of Skulls,Pulled Apart By Horses are just some of the amazing bands to grace the many stages at Reading and Leeds this year, a festival not to be missed, a good Festival to be at while the summer fests start drawing near to a close from the years festival fun!..

So it you have been one of the 160,000 fanatical music enthusiasts who have made this the most thrilling festival on earth and if you want to see every band that matters then Reading & Leeds Festival at Little John’s Farm in Reading and Bramham Park in Leeds is the only place to be this August Bank Holiday Weekend.

I first went to the festival when I was 14 and it was the first ever festival I had been too, but being the great fest it is, it paved the way for me to be a festival lover ever since!!..

Years later going from hanging out to presenting at over 100 festivals I’m still not bored of them come rain or shine. bring it on!!…

Teenage Cancer Trust Charity Example Concert Royal Albert hall

Example Live at The Royal Albert Hall for Teenage Cancer Trust

The Royal Albert Hall Since being opened by Queen Victoria in 1871, the world’s leading artists from several performance genres have appeared on its stage and it has become one of the UK’s most treasured and distinctive and iconic buildings in London,knowing all that about the venue I was very excited to be going there to watch Example out of all the places he’s performed in the last year for his Concert in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust.

To start the show exciting new band French-soler opened,the type of band that I call there sound “dancindy“ not quite dance and not just indie,a mix grouping it with other “dancindy” sounding bands like Friendly Fires,Clock Opera,Metronomy and Everything Everything with ridiculously catchy hooks, mixed with electro dark dance beats.French-soler exerted loads of energy onto the crowd, making theses guys definitely ones to watch out for.So all in all a great kick start into the night.

With it being Teenage Cancer Trust’s week of entertainment at The Royal Albert Hall, Jessie J, Professor Green, Pulp, Florence and the Machine to name a few all on the bill to play the week of the 30th March onwards at the Royal Albert Hall, It’s a amazing Charity,giving teenagers with cancer a better life,teenage Cancer Trust believes young people’s lives shouldn’t stop because they have cancer,so they treat them as young people first,cancer patients second, they have access to the best possible care and professional support from the point of diagnosis so through the night there were moving mentions in the forms of Videos and a Teenage girl talking of the brilliant work they do showing that the Teenage Cancer Trust charity is a truly meaningful one and helps the lifes of many.

Then after hearing the true reason way we were all there… on came DJ Baller B, Example’s tour DJ, who played for the next half hour ,spining some great tracks, from Knife Party, to Jay Z and Kanye, to Flux Pavilion.

Then the part of the night that everyone had been waiting for began so the crowd watched As Sheldrake, Johnny Drum Machine and David Stewart all took to The Albert Hall stage then the opening track began playing out, ‘Skies Don’t Lie‘ and Elliot AKA Example ventured onto the stage, a very musley Example I might add for the girls reading..any way..Venturing onto a stage which had only the night before, hosted Paul McCartney,The day before this concert I had spotted reviews in a number of newspapers saying how good Paul Mc Cartney was and that Example should be worried with being in the shadows of Paul McCartney’s performance from the night before,one newspaper in particular said “You wouldn’t want to be in Example’s trainers at London’s Royal Albert Hall tonight…

Example quoted this with the reply at the concert “ Paul is an undisputed legend, but we as a crowd could do better.”

Through a mix of the old tracks like ‘See The Sea‘ and ‘Hooligans‘ and then the newer tracks like ‘Never Had A Day‘, ‘Midnight Run‘, and ‘Playing In The Shadows‘, Example,which I remember from when I last saw him perform at a festival back last summer likes abit of a jump,so like every other Example show he had the band,the crowd and of course him self Jumping with the odd spin added in.

The concert had a great atmosphere ,one of the best atmospheres at a concert I had felt for a long time,You could only thank example for that with the amazing energy Example puts into the performs which then goes out to the crowd, Example has a unique way to getting the crowd going and of course boucing and at one point he shouted, “Let’s do this for Queen Victoria!” Cue massive bouncing from everyone in the standing to the very top of the galleries.I Don’t think the Royal albert all had seen bouncing like it!…

The night was truly uplifting literally had me on my feet dancing to ‘Changed The Way You Kissed Me’.So if your off to see Example on his arena tour this year or catch him at a summer fest your in for a good one!

I bought the album to keep the concert at the Royal albert hall alive…..well in my bedroom that is!!.

Mark Ronson and Katy B unveiled a giant……

Move to the Beat campaign Launch!..

Over the Last few weeks if you have been snuggled up in Front of the TV you would have caught a glimpse of the Coca-Cola Advert featuring Mark Ronson and Kate b amongst a array of Olympic sports taking place around them.

So in lead up to the advert Mark Ronson and Katy B unveiled a giant urban artwork in the shadow of the Olympic Stadium inEast London, which launched the Coca-Cola Move to the Beat™ campaign.

Move to the Beat’s Campaign’s ambition is to bring teens closer to the Olympic Games and to sport in general so who better to get involved but GRAMMY award winning producer Mark Ronson, with lyrics and vocals provided by 2011 Mercury Music Prize nominee Katy B. Together they created the Coca-Cola song, Fusing the sounds of sport and music together.

The dramatic Beat Wall, an urban artwork painted by a collective of internationally acclaimed young artists, marks the launch of the Move to the Beat™ campaign. Situated in Hackney,East London, the 25 metre wide by 10 metre tall artwork was created by photorealists Neil Edward, Hadley Ever and Smug.

“Move to the Beat™ is all about getting teens excited about London 2012 by tapping into their passion for music and fusing it with sport,” said Mark Ronson.

So next time you catch the advert on TV your know what it’s all about!!!..

Launch of Topman Ctrl “Get your music fix”…..

Where’s Wally? (Can You Find Presenter/Blogger Kysha?)……

Musio was very excited when they received there invite to the launch of Topman Ctrl 2012…

Dj and Broadcaster Huw Stephens & Guest Controllers The 2 Bears brought you the very Exclusive launch of Topman Ctrl 2012.

If you think that was enough,it didn’t stop there the night included performances and Dj sets from CLOCK OPERA , SCRU FIZZER / LADY LESHURR ,CITZENS! and STAR SLINGER.

To kick start the night as guests arrived Luke Turner from The Quietus took to the decks.

Followed by a amazing performance from hotly tipped newbie’s the Citzens theses guys where chosen to perform on Radio 1 by The Chris Moyles show and have already had radio play on Zane Lowe’s show, the futures bright for theses lovely chaps!

After another Dj set from Luke Turner, band Clock Opera performed proving still to be the great band that they were many years ago when musio spotted them at Lovebox and back then thought they were a band to watch out for.

With the party in full swing Huw Stephens took to the mic and said “Now the Parties Started”……

This followed by a Dj set from UK producer and Dj Star Slinger …Then from the night having a electro indie sound changed to a more grimy urban feel which got the crowd dancing when grime MC Lady Leshurr started to perform, Lady Leshurr has been dubbed a female Busta Rhymes,to me she reminded me of a early Lil’ Kim when her sharp lyrical sound unleashed it self onto the crowd.

Last to perform before The 2 Bears got down to DJ was Scru Fizzer, west London,producer& MC previously named Eyes changed to Scru Face and Now Scru Fizzer proving his fast flow worked on the crowd getting boys in caps grinding,mixed with the skinny jean wearing crew looking confused.

Then to end a great night were The Guest Controllers the London-based musical duo formed in 2009 composed of Joe Goddard of electronic band Hot Chip and Rat Rundell AKA The 2 Bears,who appeared behind the decks wearing Bear suits, Djing the night away.

I’m intrigued to know the obsession with Bears?…..and whether they were boiling wearing bearsuits behind the decks?…
